Martinez Keeps Future Under Wraps While Pursuing World Cup Glory with Portugal
Amidst ongoing speculation regarding his future, 52-year-old Roberto Martinez has confirmed that his contract will conclude following the World Cup. However, he remains resolute in prioritizing the task at hand: "finishing the work we have begun three-and-a-half years ago."
"This isn't a new topic; we have extensively discussed it here in Portugal," Martinez conveyed. "The paramount focus is to concentrate on clinching the World Cup."
Unfortunately for Martinez, he will be without center-back Ruben Dias, who is unavailable after failing to recover from an injury sustained during Portugal's friendly against Nigeria.
"Medically, we require him to be at 100% for a World Cup match, and that is our approach. At this stage of the tournament, we must avoid taking risks," he elaborated.
On a positive note, the squad is bolstered by the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is gearing up for his sixth World Cup appearance. Martinez expressed that it feels as if this is the forward's first, given the unwavering intensity he brings to the tournament.
"He is a role model, an iconic figure in global football, inspiring athletes of all genders who are passionate about the sport. Even though this is his sixth World Cup, it feels like his first due to the exceptional commitment he showcases," Martinez emphasized.
"His role is crucial for our team; he creates space for others on the pitch as a striker."
Martinez anticipates a formidable challenge against Congo, a team renowned for its physicality and rapid transitions. He cautioned against underestimating their African adversaries.
"We must match Congo's emotional intensity. A victory by just one goal is the bare minimum; a draw would be disastrous, and a loss would feel utterly devastating," he stated.
"Cape Verde has shown that there are no easy matches in this World Cup," he added, referencing the debutants' surprising 0-0 draw with European champions Spain in their opening game on Monday.
Captain Bruno Fernandes shared that the team will carry the memory of former teammate Diogo Jota in their hearts. Tragically, Jota lost his life in a car accident last year, a loss that would have significantly impacted the squad in this World Cup.
"Everyone has spoken about him," Fernandes reflected. "He was an extraordinary teammate, incredibly humble, and deeply passionate about his contributions to our country and the sport of football as a whole."
"For us, he will always remain a part of our group."
