Luka Modric Embraces Final World Cup with Rejuvenated Spirit
Croatia is set to face England on Wednesday in Texas, marking one of the most anticipated matchups of the group stage in North America.
The 40-year-old Luka Modric will once again lead his nation, having famously guided Croatia to victory over England in the World Cup semi-finals back in 2018, as he orchestrates play from midfield.
Alongside legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, this tournament represents the final chapter for one of the most celebrated players in football over the last two decades.
Now donning the AC Milan jersey after over a decade at the core of Real Madrid's midfield, Modric is poised to earn his 200th cap for Croatia in the North American tournament.
"Every game, every tournament is special at 40 with the national team," Modric expressed on the eve of the clash against England.
"My goal in this tournament is to relish the experience, give my best, and most importantly, enjoy it," he added.
"I want to savor every match and every training session with this incredible group of players."
Croatia breezed through the qualifying rounds but enters the World Cup with a low profile—similar to their approach in previous major tournaments.
Yet, England should remain cautious; underestimating Croatia, even with their older squad, could prove to be a costly mistake.
Joining Modric is another veteran, 37-year-old winger Ivan Perisic, along with Manchester City stars Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic.
Excitement surrounds young defender Luka Vuskovic, just 19 years old, who is expected to start against England, with Modric stating: "There are many young players, and I feel rejuvenated alongside them."
Long-time coach Zlatko Dalic is eager to face England once again, keen to see how his players will confront an attack spearheaded by the prolific Harry Kane.
"The opponent is of high quality," he remarked.
"We are well aware of their capabilities; we have analyzed them, and they are equally aware of us... they are very dangerous," he continued.
"With the best strikers in the world, they pose a significant threat, especially with Kane—he can do a lot, a tremendous amount," he added, also expressing caution regarding the threats posed by Thomas Tuchel's side during set-pieces.
"We are well-prepared for that," he concluded.
Also competing in Group L are Ghana and Panama.
