Haaland Aims for Glory After Impressive World Cup Debut
"I have to tell him that I'm coming for that record. That's fun. I'm going to send him a little message," declared Erling Braut Haaland in an interview with VG.no following his remarkable performance.
Following their opening match, Norway currently tops World Cup Group I on goal difference, edging out France after the first of three crucial group encounters.
"It’s fantastic to debut in the World Cup, score two goals, and secure a victory. I'm absolutely thrilled. It was a blast," Haaland expressed post-match.
The Manchester City forward netted his 56th and 57th international goals during Norway’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years, marking a significant milestone since they last reached the knockout stage at the 1998 World Cup in France, a tournament that occurred before Haaland was born.
Feeling the pressure of expectations, Haaland shared his determination to live up to the hype generated by his stellar display.
“Of course I will try,” he affirmed. “It’s about maintaining focus and not overthinking. It’s challenging at this level. But I’ll concentrate on the next match, enjoy the moment, and keep my composure.”
Former Swedish international Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now a pundit for American broadcaster Fox, praised Haaland’s performance during the half-time break, stating, "Look at the efficiency. Two goals. It was a mistake from the goalkeeper, but still a good goal."
"The first goal was good, and the second was even better," Haaland remarked in response to Ibrahimovic's comments.
Norway's next challenge at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set against Senegal on Monday, June 22, 2026.
