Belgium Dominates New Zealand to Secure Top Spot in Group

Both teams entered their final group match fully aware that a victory would guarantee a place in the knockout stages. However, the pressure was squarely on Belgium, eager to avoid consecutive early exits from the World Cup.

It came as no surprise when the Red Devils pressed for an early goal. They nearly found the breakthrough through Leandro Trossard, whose close-range effort hit the inside of the post, only to be cleared off the line by a vigilant Tyler Bindon.

Belgium's frustration was short-lived, as they earned a penalty when referee Adham Makhadmeh pointed to the spot after Finn Surman handled Trossard’s shot. However, the call was overturned, with the defender’s hand deemed to be in a natural position.

Following the first hydration break, Trossard capitalized on shaky defending during a corner, striking home the opening goal from close range, igniting the Belgian celebration.

Despite New Zealand having scored first in their previous two Group G matches, they rarely threatened Thibaut Courtois’ goal during the first half of his record-breaking 18th World Cup appearance.

As the lowest-ranked team entering the tournament (85th), it was no surprise when Darren Bazeley’s squad fell further behind after halftime. Trossard showcased his skill with a well-taken volley, marking his brace after a clever display of footwork.

With an eye on overtaking group leaders Egypt on goal difference, Kevin De Bruyne extended Belgium’s lead with a precise low strike that left Max Crocombe with no chance.

As time wound down, Elijah Just managed to score a consolation goal for New Zealand, delivering a controlled finish for his third goal of the tournament.

However, Belgium quickly responded, with Romelu Lukaku heading in a cross from Nicolas Raskin, becoming his nation’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history with six goals. Fellow substitute Alexis Saelemaekers then capped the night by guiding in the fifth goal.

This commanding victory secures Belgium the top position in the group, extending their unbeaten run to 16 matches (W10, D6). For New Zealand, who last triumphed over a European opponent in 2010 (D4, L14), this defeat marks their 11th loss in the last 14 games (W1, D2).

The OFC representatives now share the record with Honduras for the most World Cup finals matches played without a victory (D4, L5), finishing at the bottom of the group with a mere point to show for their efforts.
