New Zealand's Stellar Performance Proves Their Worth at the World Cup, Says Coach
In an exhilarating Group G opener, Iran had to rally twice to secure a draw against New Zealand, showcasing a remarkable performance that included a standout brace from New Zealand's Elijah Just.
Coach Darren Bazeley reflected on the match, stating, "That may be our best performance ever, or since I've been involved with the All Whites, which is a long time."
He continued, "Overall, I thought it was a really strong performance, and I believe we demonstrated to the world who we are and the caliber of our players."
The draw leaves all four teams in the group with one point each, following Belgium's earlier 1-1 stalemate with Egypt.
Despite this, New Zealand remains winless in their third World Cup appearance, having now played seven matches without securing a victory.
Bazeley expressed his disappointment, noting that his team produced enough quality moments to clinch a win but felt the sting of coming so close. "We came here to win, and today we were on the brink of making history," he lamented. "To be so close to our first-ever World Cup win and not achieve it really hurts."
New Zealand appeared set to hold onto their lead until Iran's Mohammad Mohebbi expertly headed in a perfect cross, a moment that Bazeley attributed to one of the few defensive lapses from his squad.
Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the tournament and expects his players to generate more positive moments. "We’ve been building and improving over the years in terms of our performances," he said. "I’ve often noted that in every game against formidable opponents, we have moments where we play exceptionally well and create chances. Today, we were more consistent in that regard."
