World Cup 2026 - Day 6: Argentina and France Finally Take Centre Stage

The FIFA World Cup 2026 rolls into another exciting day of action as two of the tournament's biggest favourites prepare to make their long-awaited debut.

Reigning world champions Argentina and 2018 winners France will both take to the field for the first time in North America, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé expected to headline a day packed with storylines, history and high expectations.

France begin their Group I campaign against Senegal in what promises to be one of the most intriguing fixtures of the opening round. The meeting revives memories of the famous 2002 World Cup opener, when Senegal stunned the defending champions with a historic 1-0 victory. Twenty-four years later, the Lions of Teranga will be hoping to write another memorable chapter against Les Bleus.

Later in the evening, Norway finally return to football's biggest stage after a 28-year absence. Led by goal machine Erling Haaland, the Scandinavians open their tournament against Iraq, who are making their own long-awaited return to the World Cup. With France and Senegal also in Group I, every point could prove crucial in the race for qualification.

Attention then shifts to Group J, where all eyes will be on Lionel Messi as Argentina begin the defence of their world title against Algeria. The Albiceleste arrive in the United States carrying the weight of expectation after their triumph in Qatar four years ago, while Algeria will be eager to spring one of the tournament's first major surprises.

The final match of the day sees Austria take on Jordan in Group J. Austria are back at the World Cup for the first time in 28 years and will be determined to make a winning start, but Jordan have already shown throughout qualification that they are capable of causing problems for more fancied opponents.
