"We got off to a fantastic start," Nagelsmann reflected. "Unfortunately, right after scoring, we began to commit tactical errors with our positioning, which complicated matters for us.

"Ecuador had everything at stake, and it was evident - they were relentless. However, I can't say that my players didn't give it their all; that would be an oversimplification."

Nagelsmann expressed his disappointment at heading into the knockout phase on the heels of a loss, with Germany set to compete in the last 32 on Monday.

"Defeat is never a good omen, especially in a match where we couldn't lose our top spot," the coach emphasized.

"We'll take our lessons from this and move forward. We need to learn and improve, but our focus must also be on what lies ahead.

"We've won many matches, lost just one, and on Monday, it's crucial that we start strong and give everything to progress to the next round."

Germany's captain, Joshua Kimmich, noted the clear difference in determination between the two teams.

"The key difference today was that our opponents wanted the win more than we did. You could feel their urgency, especially in the second half. They deserved their victory," he stated to reporters.

Kimmich stressed the importance of tightening their defense in the last-32 game to avoid an early exit from the tournament.

"We keep inviting the opposition back into the game with our turnovers, which only empowers them," Kimmich warned.

"Thankfully, we haven't faced dire consequences yet. But we can't afford another defeat - that's clear. We must avoid conceding one or two goals in every match.

"We need to minimize our turnovers, and then we can beat anyone."
