Lionel Messi matched the all-time FIFA World Cup goal-scoring record by netting a stunning three goals as Argentina launched their title defense with a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria in a Group J clash in Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

Both Messi and Algeria's Fares Chaibi had attempts disallowed for offside during a thrilling start, but Argentina's captain quickly made his presence felt with an exquisite finish.

The Inter Miami star collected the ball 30 yards from goal, skillfully evading his marker, surging forward, and curling a fantastic shot past the outstretched hands of Luca Zidane.

Messi soon added his second, capitalizing on a rebound after Zidane failed to hold onto Mac Allister's powerful shot, before deftly slotting the ball home with his right foot.

He completed his hat-trick with a signature curling finish from the edge of the area, marking his 200th senior international appearance in spectacular fashion and handing Algeria their first defeat of the 2026 World Cup.

Following the match, a stunned Mandi, who plays for Lille, acknowledged Messi's unparalleled efficiency, admitting that despite their best efforts to contain him, he proved to be simply too good for them.

Messi's Impact

“The difference was that they have a player who is ruthless; almost every chance he gets ends up in the back of the net,” Mandi shared with FIFA.com.

“He might be the best player of all time. We knew his efficiency was formidable. We tried to shut him down as much as possible, but it simply didn’t work – he was too good for us.”

Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, praised Messi, stating: “I can't find the words to describe (Lionel) Messi. For 20 years, he's given us breathtaking performances, inspiring everyone who witnesses him play.”

“We’ll take it one game at a time. The team is pleased; we managed to give playing time to many players. Hopefully, we can secure a win in the next match to ensure everyone is ready for the third group game.”

Algeria’s Upcoming Challenge Against Jordan

This marks Algeria's fifth appearance on the world stage, with their best performance coming during the 2014 tournament in Brazil, where they reached the knockout stages for the first time, narrowly losing 2-1 to the eventual champions, Germany, in extra time.

The Fennecs advanced from a group that featured Belgium, South Korea, and Russia, with their memorable 4-2 victory over South Korea making them the first African team to score at least four goals in a single World Cup match.

They reached the Round of 16, pushing Germany to a thrilling 2-1 extra-time defeat. Algeria still has a chance to progress in the 2026 edition if they can win their remaining matches and hope for favorable outcomes in other fixtures.

Algeria's next challenge is against Jordan on June 22nd, followed by their final group match against Austria on June 27th at Kansas City Stadium.
