Jordan showcased their attacking prowess right from the start, creating a prime opportunity within just two minutes. A swift counter-attack culminated in Ehsan Haddad striking the side netting, followed by Musa Al-Taamari's first shot on goal, which was comfortably saved by Austria's Alexander Schlager.

The Jordanians adopted a defensive strategy, aiming to stifle the Austrian offense while seeking to capitalize on counter-attacks. This tactic almost paid off when Odeh Al-Fakhouri unleashed a powerful shot from 25 yards, compelling Schlager to tip the effort over the bar.

However, the debutants' promising start was abruptly halted on the 20-minute mark. Xaver Schlager deftly laid the ball back for Romano Schmid, who curled a stunning shot into the top corner from outside the box, marking Austria's first genuine chance.

Al-Nashama almost responded perfectly just two minutes later when a corner was directed to the near post, but Ali Olwan's header narrowly clipped the crossbar. After the first-half hydration break, Austria regained control, but Jordan's Olwan came close again with a fierce shot in the 34th minute, which Schlager could only parry to Al-Taamari, whose follow-up was crucially blocked by Philipp Lienhart.

As half-time approached, the West Asians appeared stronger, yet Al-Taamari's effort dragged wide in added time and was the closest they came to leveling the score before the break.

Five minutes into the second half, a moment that will be etched in Jordanian football history unfolded. After forcing a turnover in their own half, Noor Al-Rawabdeh expertly set Olwan racing down the left wing. He cut into the 18-yard box and delivered a clean strike around Schlager, finding the back of the net off the post for his 30th international goal.

In a manner reminiscent of their first-half response, Das Team quickly rallied after conceding. Following half-chances for Stefan Posch and Carney Chukwuemeka, Austria believed they had regained the lead when substitute Marko Arnautovic slotted home from a corner. However, a VAR review disallowed the goal due to a handball by Posch before the ball reached Austria’s record scorer.

Yet, Ralf Rangnick’s side refused to be thwarted at their next corner, 13 minutes from time. Marcel Sabitzer’s delivery wreaked havoc in the Jordan defense, resulting in Yazan Al-Arab inadvertently diverting the ball into his own net.

Although Arnautovic squandered a chance to extend the lead by shooting directly at Yazeed Abulaila in a one-on-one situation, he later earned a penalty in the 10th minute of added time when his ball across goal was handled by Salim Obaid.

Taking matters into his own hands, Arnautovic converted the penalty for his 48th international goal, securing Austria's first World Cup victory since 1990 and placing them level with Argentina on three points in Group J.

Jamal Sellami’s squad can breathe a sigh of relief as they will not face another UEFA member in the group, having now gone eight matches without a win against European competition.
