Kalidou Koulibaly: Senegal Frustrated but Proud After France Setback

The Lions of Teranga aimed to secure a second victory over France in their group stage campaign at the global showpiece, showcasing a performance that brims with courage, quality, and ambition. However, their efforts were ultimately thwarted in the second half.

Senegal matched the 2022 World Cup finalists in every aspect, at times appearing the more menacing side, but the outcome was dictated by the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe netted twice, with Bradley Barcola adding another, as Senegal fought valiantly during the opening hour but failed to convert their chances into goals.

Ibrahim Mbaye ignited hopes of a comeback for Senegal with a strike that narrowed the score to 2-1, but it proved insufficient to maintain pressure on France, who ultimately secured victory.

‘The Scoreline is Disheartening’

“I believe we have nothing to be ashamed of from the first half. We played exceptionally well, applying pressure. In the second half, they responded with greater intensity and took advantage of our mistakes when we lost possession,” remarked Koulibaly following the thrilling Group I encounter.

“The scoreline feels a bit harsh; I think it’s undeserved, yet that’s the nature of football. Details matter, and today, we stumbled in critical situations.”

Koulibaly continued: “Starting with a defeat is disappointing. We know Senegal prefers to kick off competitions strongly, and it’s unfortunate that we didn’t.”

He acknowledged the challenge posed by a team that has reached the finals in the last two editions of the tournament, emphasizing their status as one of the world’s elite teams.

With two group stage matches remaining, Koulibaly urged his teammates to learn from the mistakes made against France and prepare for an improved performance ahead.

“We must address our turnovers and tighten our defense. Conceding three goals in a World Cup match is significant. Offensively, we need to start finding the net,” emphasized the captain of the Lions of Teranga.

“We’re in a tournament setting. We must remember the positives while working to improve on our shortcomings. We’re frustrated and eager to secure victories. We understand we’ve let many fans down, but we must remain united.”

Senegal’s Ambitions Remain Intact

Midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye echoed Koulibaly’s sentiments, asserting that the result did not accurately reflect the match’s dynamics.

“We began the match strongly. Unfortunately, we conceded goals in the second half. I believe the scoreline is extremely harsh, but that’s football,” stated Gueye.

“This is just the beginning of the competition. I think this match will provide us with valuable lessons to correct our mistakes and prepare for the next one—that’s what matters most.”

Reflecting on the game, Gueye noted: “We conceded an early goal in the second half, which disrupted our rhythm to equalize.”

“There were opportunities, including Jackson’s disallowed goal; had we scored that and leveled at 1-1, it could have altered the game’s trajectory.”

Despite the setback, Gueye remains optimistic about Senegal's chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

“Now, our focus shifts to the next match. Our objective remains clear: to advance beyond the group stage. We still have two matches ahead, and we must prepare thoroughly,” concluded Gueye.

Senegal will face Norway next on June 23rd, a team that commenced their campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Iraq.
