Belgium's Stunning Comeback Clinches Extra Time Victory Over Senegal

Belgium's Stunning Comeback Clinches Extra Time Victory Over Senegal

This thrilling clash marked the first-ever encounter between two nations that concluded their group stage campaigns on a high note after rocky beginnings.

Although Leandro Trossard had an early opportunity, it was Senegal who appeared to carry the momentum into this knockout stage. Ismaïla Sarr came agonizingly close when his hooked attempt struck the post, shortly before playing a pivotal role in the game’s opening goal. The Crystal Palace forward's header ricocheted off the post from Sadio Mané’s enticing cross, allowing Habib Diarra to capitalize on the rebound and give Pape Thiaw’s side a deserved lead.

Confidence surged within the Lions de la Téranga, as Mané executed a clever one-two with Diarra before slipping while attempting a shot, which allowed Thibaut Courtois to make a straightforward save. In stark contrast, Belgium appeared sluggish but nearly equalized when Maxim De Cuyper’s shot from the edge of the area prompted a stunning one-handed save from Mory Diaw as halftime approached.

Garcia would have hoped for a spirited response from his side after the break, but disaster struck just six minutes into the second half. Sarr took full advantage of some abysmal Belgian defending, seamlessly controlling Moussa Niakhaté’s long ball and clinically dispatching a strike past Courtois.

This marked the 28-year-old's fourth goal of the tournament, tying him with Roger Milla for the most goals scored by an African player in a single World Cup.

Belgium turned to their bench for a spark, and substitute Dodi Lukébakio nearly provided it with a left-footed strike that sailed inches past the far post. However, it was another substitute, Romelu Lukaku, who halved the deficit with an instinctive near-post finish from Thomas Meunier’s cross.

This set the stage for a dramatic finish, as Tielemans sensationally leveled the match, beating Diaw to Trossard’s cross and handing Garcia’s men a remarkable equalizer.

Belgium entered extra time with renewed vigor, but Senegal gradually regained their footing and came agonizingly close to reclaiming their lead in the first period, as Ibrahim Mbaye’s first-time effort flew narrowly wide after a pass from Bara Sapoko Ndiaye.

Lukébakio nearly clinched the match right at the death when his close-range shot clipped the bar, but referee Saíd Martínez dramatically pointed to the spot after a VAR review determined that Lamine Camara had fouled Tielemans in the box. Tielemans stepped up to the penalty spot and coolly slotted the ball into the net, securing his nation’s place in the last 16 in the fifth minute of stoppage time during extra time, sending Diaw the wrong way and completing a comeback to rival the legendary Harry Houdini.

Senegal were left to lament what could have been, as their hopes of replicating the iconic quarter-final run of 2002 were dashed with a fifth consecutive World Cup defeat against European sides. Meanwhile, Belgium will return to Seattle in six days to face the winner of the last-32 clash between the United States and Bosnia & Herzegovina, as their seasoned stars seek one final shot at glory.

Man of the Match: Youri Tielemans (Belgium)
