Pape Thiaw Calls on Senegal to 'Reverse Their Fortune' in Pivotal Clash Against Iraq
The Lions of Teranga are confronted with a daunting challenge to qualify for the next round after suffering defeats in their first two matches, losing 3-1 to France and 3-2 to Norway. Following the latter match, Senegal appeared visibly frustrated.
This setback leaves the Lions of Teranga without a single point after two matches in Group I, putting them in grave danger of an early exit from the tournament.
In their final group stage match in Toronto, Senegal must secure a victory against Iraq and rely on favorable outcomes in other matches to keep their World Cup aspirations alive.
Senegal Prepares for Iraq Showdown
"There’s been a lot of chatter lately; we must acknowledge that. It’s expected when you’re coming off two consecutive defeats, especially as one of the tournament favorites," Thiaw shared with reporters ahead of this crucial encounter, hinting at potential adjustments to his starting lineup.
"Now, it’s time to reverse our fortunes. This involves making tactical decisions on my part, but also the players stepping up. We’re prepared and working diligently. We’ll make the best choices possible."
Thiaw added: "We’ll give our all to secure qualification. The players are eager to make their mark in this World Cup. While we may not have anticipated finding ourselves in this predicament, it’s the reality we face today.
"We will do everything within our power to defeat Iraq and sustain our hopes for progression to the next round."
Reflecting on the upcoming match against Iraq, he stated: "Iraq is a technically astute and tactically disciplined team that can pose significant challenges, particularly in their attacking play.
"The defeat to Norway was painful, but it has only intensified our motivation to triumph over Iraq and secure our place in the next stage. Friday’s match is a final for both teams.
"To remain in this World Cup, victory is imperative. Our team needs its supporters; their encouragement is crucial for pushing us toward qualification."
Iraq Aiming for All Three Points
Iraq midfielder Zaid Ismaeel shared insights into their strategy for the match against Senegal, revealing that they are fueled by a desire to win.
"First and foremost, we apologize to our Iraqi fans for the errors made in our previous match. God willing, we promise our fans that this match will end in victory," Ismaeel proclaimed.
"Our players are driven by ambition, an unyielding spirit, and the support of our coaching staff as well as fans who have followed us from the United States to Canada.
"God willing, we will secure a positive outcome in this match against Senegal, and the entire Iraqi population will take pride in our performance."
When asked if Senegal’s superior goal difference would pose a challenge, he responded: "No, not at all; our coach has made it clear that the only thing that matters are the three points.
"It's these three points that will enable us to advance to the next round. It doesn’t matter who the favorites are; the game will be decided on the pitch."
Ismaeel added: "In fact, we have faced some of the best teams in Europe (France, Norway), who are favorites for the title.
"We delivered commendable performances, and God willing, the whole of Iraq will be talking about how we competed at the highest level.
"It's worth mentioning that against France, we executed a total of 422 passes out of 481 attempted, a first in the history of the Iraqi national team. God willing, we will bring joy to our people in this match against Senegal."
Senegal will be without injured goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who sustained an injury during the loss to Norway.
