The Socceroos' head coach, Tony Popovic, surprised many by opting to field Patrick Beach in place of the usual captain, Mat Ryan, while veteran midfielder Jackson Irvine found himself on the bench.

Popovic's gamble on Beach proved to be a masterstroke, as the Melbourne City goalkeeper delivered a commanding performance, making a series of crucial saves whenever Turkey managed to breach Australia's formidable defense.

Meanwhile, Irvine's substitute, Paul Okon-Engstler, also shone brightly, assisting Nestory Irankunda in securing an early lead for Australia—a lead that the team defended tenaciously before Connor Metcalfe extended it with a second goal 15 minutes from the final whistle.

However, Popovic brushed aside any notions that selecting Beach or Okon-Engstler was an unorthodox decision.

"They might be surprises to many, but not to our playing group or staff, as we work closely together every day and recognize the talent these young players possess," he stated during a press conference.

"This team was chosen to perform effectively. While outcomes are uncertain, especially at a World Cup, my focus is on performance over results. No matter the outcome, I stand by my decisions."

Having recently signed a contract extension that will see him lead the team through to the 2027 Asian Cup, Popovic is confident that his young squad has even greater potential to unleash.

"These players are just scratching the surface; they are a youthful group with minimal World Cup experience and limited time representing their national team," he remarked.

"Their peak performance is likely to emerge in four to eight years, considering most of these boys are still developing."

Turning his attention to Australia's upcoming clash against co-hosts the United States, Popovic emphasized the importance of the match, where a victory could secure the top spot in Group D.

He expressed indifference regarding whether the Socceroos’ win over Turkey would lead to increased respect from their rivals.

"I'm not concerned about that at all," he added. "Perhaps perceptions will shift slightly now that we've triumphed over Turkey, a notable nation, but we still have a significant amount of work ahead, and our focus must shift to the U.S. game."
