Colombia's Quest for the Round of 16: A Reunion with Former Manager Queiroz

The Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz, previously managed Colombia from 2019 to 2020 before departing following a string of heavy World Cup qualifying defeats against Uruguay and Ecuador. Now, he finds himself pitted against his former team after successfully guiding Ghana into the knockout stage as one of the tournament's standout third-placed teams.

While Ghana anxiously awaited confirmation that their four points in Group L would suffice to progress behind England and Croatia, Colombia sailed through Group K unbeaten, ultimately finishing ahead of Portugal after a thrilling scoreless draw in their final group match.

Under the stewardship of Nestor Lorenzo, Colombia has quietly established itself as one of the most formidable teams in the tournament, seamlessly blending defensive resilience with the attacking flair that enabled them to top a group many experts deemed one of the toughest.

Midfielder Richard Rios emphasized that Colombia would remain committed to their proactive approach that has propelled them into the knockout phase.

"We must continue to work step by step because I believe we can go very far," Rios shared with reporters.

"Every match poses its own challenges. Ghana may offer a different physical test compared to Portugal. However, if we maintain our approach and showcase our capabilities, we can make it significantly more difficult for our opponents.

"That's our plan - to impose our game and strive for victory."

Queiroz, who is making his sixth World Cup appearance as a coach, aims to replicate the joyful journey Ghana experienced in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa.

"It's crucial that everyone wakes up each morning feeling that joy," remarked captain Jordan Ayew in an interview with Olympics.com. "For too many years, that feeling has been absent, and rediscovering it is a wonderful sensation."
