Iran Stays Silent on 'Pride Match' Controversy Ahead of Key Match Against Egypt
As the pre-match press conference unfolded with Iran's head coach Amir Ghalenoei and goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, a FIFA delegate delivered a formal statement from the team, asserting: "We will only respond to questions pertaining to the game. We fully acknowledge the rights of all journalists to ask questions today, but we kindly request that you honor the Iranian Federation by focusing your inquiries on the team, tactics, and the match itself."
Despite the directive, some inquiries about the 'Pride Match' surfaced. Ghalenoei emphasized that his team's concentration lies solely on the pitch, mirroring the sentiments expressed by Egypt's coach Hossam Hassan during his own press conference.
He stated: "We are here to play football, nothing more. Our total attention is directed towards the game and achieving success in tomorrow's match. Anything outside of that, which is prohibited in our league, is not a topic for discussion; we will only speak about football."
Seattle's 'Pride Match Day' is designed to support LGBTQ+ rights as part of the city's Pride celebrations, an event organized by SeattleFWC26 and not officially sanctioned by FIFA.
Both teams have opted out of participating in the festivities. Nonetheless, FIFA has confirmed that rainbow flags will be permitted in Seattle Stadium, stating to Reuters that the World Cup is "an inclusive event that welcomes individuals from all backgrounds."
In stark contrast, during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the rainbow flag faced a complete ban at all matches.
On the field, Iran has faced numerous challenges, including visa issues, lengthy travel delays, and limited time in host cities, yet they remain unbeaten in the World Cup so far, securing two draws against New Zealand and Belgium in Group G.
A victory against Egypt in Seattle would secure their advancement to the round of 32 for the first time in their history.
Reflecting on their upcoming opponents, Ghalenoei remarked: "We believe the Egyptian team is highly organized and well-prepared. In addition to (Mohamed) Salah, they boast several talented players. In their last three matches, they've scored five goals and possess other equally skilled athletes. We aim to contain them and exploit their weaknesses."
"This match will be extremely challenging and incredibly exciting. Our complete focus will be on that."
Prior to the Seattle match, Iran's team had the opportunity to arrive a day earlier in Los Angeles, providing them with additional time for preparation.
"This was our right, which we should have had in the two previous games, but they (the USA) denied us the opportunity to arrive on time. This time, it took us three hours, so naturally, the conditions are better, and we are in a more favorable position."
