France's Ousmane Dembele delivered a stunning performance, netting a first-half hat-trick against Norway, who fielded a significantly altered lineup with coach Stale Solbakken resting 10 of their 11 regular starters, including star striker Erling Haaland. This strategic decision was made in preparation for the Round of 32 clash against Ivory Coast next week.

"It happens quickly when we lose possession a few times," Solbakken remarked. "Offensively, we generated chances throughout the match, and the boys should be credited for that. It wasn't just in the second half; we created substantial opportunities."

Striker Jorgen Strand Larsen had a chance to bring Norway back into contention early in the second half, but his weak penalty was expertly saved by France’s Mike Maignan.

"We had four significant chances in the first half, so I believe we deserve recognition for that, but losing the ball in critical areas is detrimental, as it allows for quick counterattacks," Solbakken noted.

Having finished second in their group with six points—three behind France—Norway is now set to focus on their knockout round match against the Ivory Coast on June 30 in Dallas.

This decision to rest key players, while met with disappointment from fans eager to see Haaland play, was made with an eye on the upcoming challenges.

"Now, it's about recharging our batteries. Remember, the break we had following the last game was the shortest our team has experienced in the tournament, and we have a new game coming up in just four days," said Solbakken.

"The only justification for not making the changes we did (resting 10 players) would be that the fans in Norway and here would have loved to see Erling and (captain) Martin (Odegaard). However, prioritizing longevity in the World Cup is essential, and that's our goal—we're here to advance as far as possible."
